Sinusitis

Sinusitis is characterized by mild to severe swelling of the sinus passages.

The human skull is equipped with four pair of sinuses that are used to circulate moist air throughout the entire nasal passages. The common cold is the primary cause of sinusitis; however, hay fever, food allergens, dental infections, and other environmental triggers may also lead to mild and chronic sinusitis.

Nutritional supplements that may be helpful in treating sinusitis

In preliminary studies, bromelain, an enyzme produced by the pineapple plant, has been shown to reduce symptoms of severe sinusitis. One double-blind trial reported that nearly all of the participants that were administered bromelain experienced good to excellent results. Other trials also indicated that bromelain has the ability to lower symptoms of sinusitis. When used in connection with sinusitis, the enteric-coated form of bromelain is usually taken. This form helps to prevent the stomach juices from destroying the bromelain before it can be digested. Most bromelain products available on the market are not enteric-coated. The differences between potencies of the various forms of bromelain is not known.

Herbs that may be helpful in treating sinusitis

In Germany, an herbal combination that contains gentian root, primrose flowers, sorrel herb, elder flowers, and European vervain, is one of the most popular herbal remedies for sinusitis. This combination of herbs is useful in promoting mucus drainage from the sinuses, which helps to clean and relieve the sinus passage. It is normally combined with prescription antibiotics when used for treating acute sinusitis.

Horseradish herb has been used to dissolve mucus produced by sinusitis. The normal dosage, when used for this purpose, is approximately 5 grams of grated horseradish root taken daily. Horseradish can also be taken as tincture in 2 to 3 ml doses three times daily.

Eucalyptus oil is sometimes used to clear nasal and sinus congestion caused by sinusitis. It is similar to menthol as it acts on receptors in the nasal mucous membranes, reducing nasal stuffiness and promoting decongestion. Eucalyptus oil is most frequently taken via steam inhalation from a humidifier or by boiling the oil in water..

Wood betony is a European herbal supplement that may reduce inflammation in sinusitis patients. However, no clinical trials have been performed to validate the use of wood betony as a treatment for sinusitis.
