Discovered in 1911 by chemist Casimir Funk, thiamin, also known as vitamin b1 is a water-soluble vitamin that is a base. The salts of thiamin, thiamin hydrochloride and thiamin mononitrate, are the forms of thiamin which are most commonly used in nutritional and dietary food supplements. In addition to being known as vitamin B1, thiamin is known as thiamine, aneurin, and 3-[(4-amino-2-methyl-5-pyrimidinyl) methyl]-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-thiazonium.
